Bank Holidays. An employee’s dream, and a business owner’s nightmare.
Whilst we all love a 3 or 4-day weekend (we get an extra 8 days off a year thanks to them), the stress of thinking about our high workloads when we get back can spoil the break – we’ve all been there.
The answer? Well, research shows many business owners just don’t bother. More than 1.5m bosses operating smaller businesses haven’t taken off any time in the past year . That time meant to be for family and friends has sadly been sacrificed for another day in the office.

A report by Simply Research found that a fifth of the business owners surveyed “can’t afford” to take a single day off of work during the Summer holiday, whilst 50% also admitted to cancelling plans with friends and family at least once a week because of work, with many saying they make no social plans because they know they will be too busy with work.
The irony is many start their own businesses to be their own boss, but the reality is their business becomes the boss of them.

So if you’re in that position, what can you do about it?
Having that holiday isn’t as unrealistic as you think. You won’t need to be one of those people surveyed by the Institute of Leadership and Management (80% still frequently reply to emails when on holiday, whilst 10% go back to the office) either.
The magic answer is delegation.
Business owners struggle to let go of their baby at the best of times, but for many there’s no choice in the matter. However, undoubtedly a huge proportion of a business owner’s day is still taken up by tasks that almost anyone could do .
